Development activity 3: Putting together case studies

This page offers notes on the next stage in repurposing and opening up project partners’ materials (i.e. following the stage of reflecting/reviewing and mapping the modules), that is, developing a case study.

To start with, each of the partners has chosen one of their modules to become part of a case study which documented the process of “opening up” educational resources and showcased the processes behind repurposing/ material transformation. The insights from these processes then informed the development of the final project toolkit, which has been developed as part of a project website. Moreover, the aim of the case study narrative was to develop a ‘rich description’ of partners’ material in order to increase the possibility of re-contextualisation by other users, and to develop further insights into tacit practice.

The partners were prompted to first provide a background to the module they have chosen for a case study, that is, the typical method of delivery for the module, average numbers of students as well as any relevant information on the module review process. Secondly, they would offer their reflections on material ownership as related to the institution and consortium process and address any related issues of copyright/IPR. Furthermore, partners were encouraged to reflect on their motivations to share and release, as well as offer comments on the peer-review element of the project. Finally, they would offer any insights gained in the course of their involvement in the project as well as possible recommendations for future reusers.

This written case study narrative has also been accompanied by a short two-minute video commentary. The project team put together a set of guidelines for the video narrative; we also offered hand-on guidance as well as the possibility for the partners to borrow Flip cameras purchased for the project. The partners were encouraged to reflect on the challenges they experienced while repurposing their modules and ways in which they overcame these challenges. The project team also asked the partners to discuss very briefly the relevance of their case study to the issues raised in the context of the CSAP OER project overall. These case studies are offered in the project website, with supporting multimedia, and will act as signposts for other users coming to the resources.
